Spring is honestly my favorite time of the year. Everything is waking up, some are just being born. Living in Oregon, it’s rainy and muddy.
But that’s what makes it so beautiful.
This is why Easter is in the spring. It’s a time of renewal and rebirth, and while I know the holiday itself is based on a Pagan fertility festival. Of course I know about the Christian story of Jesus’ death and resurrection. For those who are not inclined to follow an organized religion, it’s just a beautiful time of year. Flowers popping up everywhere; planted or volunteered.
Daylight Savings Time begins this weekend, on Pi Day actually! A fantastic idea for anyone who loves mathematics or baked goods. An antiquated idea at best: make more daylight so we can work longer. I understand this idea back when indoor lighting wasn’t as common as it is, or headlights on a tractor. Now these things are at the ready, so why are we still springing/falling?
Antiquated idea? Yes. Tradition or habit? Also yes, I think.
Our country is steeped in tradition and habit. Not all of it good, not all of it bad. Yeah, well most of it bad… We don’t take care of our homeless and less fortunate, we don’t take care of our elderly. We are a country made up of racists, homophobes, and xenophobes. We are also a country made up of dreamers and wishers. Kind and loving people, ones who help others. Ones who help animals and children.
Those are the kinds of traditions I can get behind.
In this season of awakening and rebirth, do something good: plant flowers to feed bees. Give to your local shelters, the ones for humans or non-humans. If you can’t give money give your time, if you can’t give your time give your support. Share information, pass on donation requests, anything you can do to help.
Most of all, give love.
