The Gift that Keeps on Giving

Posted on May 15, 2026 By Stephanie No Comments on The Gift that Keeps on Giving

So. Yeah, if you read my last post about the shitty shift, I need to follow up on that and add that my work partner and I BOTH came down with some version of Norovirus. We were both out of work the following Saturday, she was out Friday night as well. I really want to call the facility and give them a piece of my mind, but I don’t have much to spare. Also, they wouldn’t give a fuck about it if I did.

Now that that’s over, let’s get on to my newest obsession: Project Hail Mary. This is a delightful movie adapted from Andy Weir’s novel of the same name. Ryan Gosling plays our main character who gets stuck in deep, deep space trying to save the world. Except he’s not alone; he’s joined by a jaunty little sidekick (and thief of most of his scenes) Rocky. I assume not many people are reading this, so it won’t hurt if I spoil any surprises.

Rocky is a puppet who is captained by James Ortiz, who also lends his voice. Up to this point, I had not heard of James Ortiz, nor had I watched many movies that featured such a vibrant character who was played by a puppet. Having read the book a couple of years ago, I was thrilled when I heard about the film adaptation, but I wasn’t prepared for what an impact it had when I saw it. It’s even hard to describe, but I’ll round it out by saying: I can’t believe someone induced such a strong attachment in me to a singing space spider made of rocks. Didn’t think I’d be writing that one when I woke up this afternoon… I seriously can’t say enough good things about it. Go see it. Like now.
